Case Study of Selected VAB High School Scholarships Awardees
- Md. Sumon Hossain, is studying at Shekhatui Sofiar Rahman High School, Jessore at grade VIII. Son of a rickshaw puller (tri cycle) and her mother a housewife with chronic illness from asthma. From a family with 6 members, and only 2 going to school, this boy has some good potential and school has selected him to get continued his education. His father had once been a farmer but lost all their cultivable land to river erosion and now has become a rickshaw puller. VAB's support has allowed Sumon to stay in the school to pursue his education.
- Son of a professional beggar, Md. Solaiman is a student of grade IX at D A Mannan High School. Mother works as maidservant and they together support a family of five. Soliaman is the eldest of all three children and none goes to school but him alone, with the support of VAB. Good performance of Solaiman in last year in grade VIII, made school to let him continue in grade IX. Asked what he plans in the future, Solaiman said that it is a disgrace for him to see his father begs, but considering the physical condition of his father, who is physically handicapped while working in a factory, there is nothing else that his father can now do. He hopes to complete his Secondary School Certificate Exam and looking forward for a small job to support his further education into college.
- Daughter of a carpenter, Arati Shaha, 15 years of age, has been under VAB Program for last two years, studying at Bitghar Radhanath High School. First girl of the class, she is making a good performance in last years. A family of four, hardly can afford bear all family costs with a meager income coming from father, who has job only half of the month, but both children are at school. When asked of her future plan, Arati says she wants to be a doctor. Her school performance suggests that she is trying all her best and thanks goes to VAB Scholarship Program to see her at school.
- Alamgir Hosain, has just been inducted into VAB scholarship program this year at Taimos Begum High School. Son of a rickshaw puller, with monthly income to Tk.1200 or 17 US dollar, supports a family of seven members. Mother - a maidservant just works to have her food free but cannot supplement any additional income to family. Alamgir is a very good student and wants to see his SSC level completed so he can further continue his education into college and beyond. His father wants to see this boy complete his education at least up to school level.
- Ayesha Akhtar has been studying at Taimos Begum High School in grade IX. Fourth children of 7, and only female member of the family goes to school, Ayesha often goes to school starved. Her parents did not like the idea of her going to school, but her interests to education and the supports that she received from VAB allowed her to still continue her education. Daughter of a day labor, Ayesha, sometime coaches students of lower grades to make some money to help her parents.
- Md. Aman Ullah, 3rd children of his parents, is in grade IX at Shibpur High School. VAB is supporting him for last two years. Son of a tailor who hardly makes an amount to support his family, his mother works as a maidservant in a house within her own community. Aman's father tailored all school uniform this year for VAB students of his school. A book lover, Aman finished reading 34 books this year from his school library and considered to be the best reader of the school this year. He also has been judged the best debater this year in his school district.
Case Study of Selected VAB College Scholarship Awardees
- Mohammad Hossain is from Bitghar Radhanath High School, Nabinagar, Brahmanbaria. He earned A+ with GPA 5 in last SSC exam. His father is a farmer; mother a housewife with 12 family members of whom two go the school. His father and eldest brother work part time on their 1bigha farmland and work as tenants on other's land. Explaining her reason to seek VAB scholarship, she notes, "I come from poor family. My father is a poor farmer. He earns some money, which is insufficient to continue our family. So I need this scholarship."
- Md. Uali Ullah is from Barashalghar UMA High School, Debidwar, Comilla. He earned A with GPA 4.75 in last SSC exam. His father is a farmer and mother a housewife in a family of 10 members of whom two go to school. Explaining her reason to seek VAB scholarship, she notes, "My father and my elder brother are the only earning members of the family. Their income is not enough to maintain our family and bear our educational expenses. So I need this scholarship."
- Kazi Shamsul Huda is from Shaikhati Shafiar Rahman Model Academy, Kotwali, Jessore. He earned A with GPA 4.69 in last SSC exam. His father is fully disabled and mother a housewife in a family of seven members dependent on the income of his elder brother. Explaining his reason to seek VASB scholarship, he notes, "I am a son of a very poor family. My father is not able to continue my study. He is an old man and has nothing to do. My family member is seven and we have only one earning member. It is very hard for him to bear our family expenses and my educational expenses. So I need help from VAB. Otherwise my educational life fails to reach the goal of my life. If I get this help I shall be very obedient to this project in my whole life."
- Moniruzzaman is from R M high school, Raipura, Narshingdi. Her earned A with GPA 4.06 in last SSC exam. His father died, leaving her mother only earning member to support a family of five. Explaining his reason for VAB scholarship, he notes, "My mother is the only earning member of our family. Her small income will not be able to support my educational expenditure. But I like to continue my studies and badly in need of this scholarship."
- Rozina Khatoon is from Sapahar Zaman Nagar Girls High School, Sapahar, Naogaon. She earned A in last SSC exam. Her father is a small farmer and mother is housewife in a family of five. Explaining her reason for seeking VAB support, she notes, "I need this scholarship because I am a needy student. I was born in very poor family. My father is the only earning member of our family. He is a very poor farmer who has to maintain a large family of five members. Now it is impossible for him to maintain my educational expenses. So I am praying for your kind consideration to continue my study."
- Jahir Mazumder is from Mirzanagar Towhid Academy, Parashuram, Feni. He earned A with GPA 4.00 in last SSC exam. His father is a serviceman (Messenger in a Office) and mother a housewife in family of eight with three school going members. In his own words, he notes, "This scholarship is very potential for me because my family cannot bear my educational expenses. I will be benefited from VAB scholarship program in future. I can continue my educational career with VAB's help."
